Custom Yard Sign Sizes: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Project
Share
Yard signs are one of the most effective and affordable ways to get a message in front of people, whether you're running a political campaign, advertising a small business, celebrating a graduation, or promoting a community event. But one of the first questions everyone asks is: what size should I order?
The answer depends on where the sign will be placed, how far away people will be reading it, and how much information you need to fit. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the most common yard sign sizes and when to use each one.
24" x 18" — The Standard
This is the most popular yard sign size in the industry, and for good reason. A 24x18 sign is large enough to be read from about 70 feet away, fits on standard metal H-wire stakes, and is affordable enough to order in bulk. This is the size you see on political lawns, real estate listings, and small business promotions. If you're not sure what size to pick, this is your safest bet.
Best for: political campaigns, real estate for-sale signs, small business advertising, event directional signs, graduation displays, and general announcements.
18" x 24" — The Vertical Option
Same dimensions as the standard, just flipped to portrait orientation. This works well when your design is taller than it is wide, like a headshot photo for a campaign sign, or a stacked layout with a headline on top and contact info on the bottom. It uses the same H-stakes as the 24x18 size.
Best for: campaign signs with candidate photos, graduation signs with portraits, and any design with a vertical layout.
12" x 18" — The Compact Choice
When you need something smaller and more budget-friendly, the 12x18 is a solid option. It's perfect for short messages, directional arrows, or situations where you want to place multiple signs along a path without overwhelming the space. These are commonly used for directing guests at events, marking parking areas, or supplementing larger signs.
Best for: directional signs, path markers, event wayfinding, small logo displays, and budget-conscious campaigns.
36" x 24" — The Attention Grabber
When the standard 24x18 isn't quite big enough, step up to 36x24. This size is noticeably larger and works great for busy roadsides where you need to grab attention from passing vehicles. The extra space also lets you fit more information or a larger photo.
Best for: roadside business advertising, contractor job site signs, large event announcements, and sports team promotions.
How to Decide: 3 Questions to Ask
- How far away will people be when they read it? If your sign needs to be visible from a road, go with 24x18 or larger. For walkway or porch placement, 12x18 works fine.
- How much text do you need? The more words you want on the sign, the bigger the sign needs to be. A name and phone number fits easily on a 12x18. A full business advertisement with a logo, tagline, and contact info needs at least a 24x18.
- How many signs are you placing? If you're putting out dozens of signs for a campaign or event, the 24x18 gives you the best balance of visibility and cost per sign.
What Material Are Yard Signs Made Of?
Standard yard signs are made from 4mm corrugated plastic, also called coroplast. It's lightweight, weatherproof, and rigid enough to stand up on stakes in wind and rain. All of our yard signs at The Sign Room are printed on 4mm coroplast using commercial UV flatbed printers — vibrant color that won't run or fade in weather. We include a metal H-wire stake with every order at no extra charge.
