Campaign Yard Signs: What Every Candidate Needs to Know Before Ordering

Political yard signs are still one of the most visible and cost-effective tools in any campaign's arsenal. They build name recognition, signal community support, and create a visual presence that digital ads can't replicate. A well-designed yard sign on a busy road gets seen by thousands of people every day for months. But the difference between a sign that builds recognition and one that gets ignored comes down to a few design decisions.

Keep It Simple

The number one mistake campaigns make is putting too much text on signs. People read yard signs from moving vehicles in 2–3 seconds. Your sign needs:

  • The candidate's name (large)
  • The office being sought
  • Optionally, a simple tagline or party affiliation

You do not need a website URL, phone number, platform paragraph, or QR code. Those belong on mailers and door hangers. The sign's only job is name recognition.

Design Rules That Work

Use high-contrast colors: dark text on light backgrounds or vice versa. Classic combos like dark blue on white or white on red work because they're readable at speed. Make the name the largest element, taking up 40–50% of the sign area. Use bold, clean sans-serif fonts like Arial or Helvetica. And leave white space — empty space around the text actually makes the name more readable and memorable.

Size and Quantity

The standard political yard sign is 24" x 18", printed double-sided on corrugated plastic with a metal H-wire stake. For major intersections, step up to 36" x 24" or 4' x 8'. A few large signs at key intersections can have more impact than dozens of standard signs on quiet streets. Most local campaigns order 100–500 signs; state-level campaigns order 1,000–10,000+.

Placement Tips

Place signs at eye level from a driver's perspective (top of sign about 3–4 feet off the ground). Face toward oncoming traffic. At intersections, place where drivers will be stopped. Always get permission from property owners, and check local rules on public right-of-way placement — these vary significantly.
